Abstract
Present experiment was attempted originally to induce haploidal calli in cucumber. Due to some unfavorable conditions in the material used, no haploidal calli were obtained. Instead, aggregate of diploidal single cells arose from the basal parts of the anthers.
Followings are some of the results obtained in the morphological observation of single cells:
1. Sticky jelly-like calli were formed on the underside of anther about one week after inoculation.
2. Sticky calli were consisted of various free single cells suspended in jelly-like mucilage.
3. At the early stage of formation, single cells were small and globular in shape, had dense cytoplasm and thin cell wall; later they differentiated into various shapes and sizes.
4. The mode of differentiation of these sigle cells were similar to the development of microspores into mature pollen grains.
